Claying with type

“Claying with Type” is a collaborate project between type designer Guðmundur Úlfarsson (Or Type) and product designer Hanna Dís Whitehead where they work with their joint interest in the journey between the digital and the handmade. The works are based on a visual conversation between the two artists, from two-dimensional to three-dimensional and vice-versa, which is sometimes misunderstood and has even been distorted midway.

In the process, Hanna started by disassembling and making new shapes inspired by elements in the different typefaces from Or Type. She then translated them into clay by making simple ceramic shape reliefs. The reliefs developed into ceramic sculptures that visually change shape every time the viewer changes their point of view. From his different point of view, Guðmundur then drew multiple symbols from each sculptures.

Exhibited in Gallerý Port, Reykjavík during Designmarch 2020.
